This was a dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy, at the University of Liverpool, U.K. in 1968.
The original was produced in two volumes:- Volume I: Text and Volume II: Illustrations
comprised xi + 361 pages of double-spaced typescript quarto (in line with Ph.D. exam. requirements!).

The original was produced on that design icon, the Olivetti Lettera 32 Portable Typewriter. In this web version, the page width and font type /size have been selected to give the 'feel' of the original paper copy.

presented 90 photographic plates, printed on 10x14 inch paper (and still as sharp as new after over 34 years, I'm glad to say!), together with alternate pages with legends describing the electron micrographs.

The original photos were scanned at just 100 pixels/inch (to keep file size reasonable) into JPG files and slightly reduced to appear near their original size on my computer screen (1024 x 768 pixels, 13inch).
